About

Malin Wättring is a musician and composer based in Gothenburg, Sweden. Her main instrument is saxophone and she’s mostly working within the field of modern jazz and improvised music. She recently took a step in a new musical direction and started a solo project where she plays the guitar and sings. The music can be described as a mix between indie rock and singer-songwriter with influences from grunge, pop and experimental music.

Malin is known and appreciated for her personal sound both as a musician and composer. Her musical expression is lyrical and melodic but also raw and powerful. She moves unhindered between different styles and genres.

“The ear and heart always wins over theory. I’m not interested in genres, I’m interested in creativity and to be present in the moment, experiencing, exploring and expressing whats there.“

“Music is the love of my life. Music is my medicine. My teacher. It is the place where I feel the most free. It challenges me and makes me grow as a person. Music is a platform where I get to meet other people on a deeper level; musicians, the audience and people who also just loves music and that enriches my life so much! Music is an adventure, it fills me with inspiration, life force and love. I am forever grateful that music found me.”

Malin is the leader for several bands and projects, such as her own quartet Malin Wättring 4 & Gothenburg Art Ensemble. She has composed commissioned works for Bohuslän Big Band and Gothenburg Wind Orchestra and has released four albums in her own name. She has collaborated with a large number of well-known musicians and groups.

Malin has a bachelor degree in improvised music from the Academy for Music & Drama in Gothenburg and has been working as a professional musician since 2011. She’s won several prizes for her musical work, such as Stenastifelsen’s scholarship 2019, “Composer of the year” at the Swedish National Radio’s annual “Jazzkattengalan” 2017 and the Bengt Säve-Söderbergh scholarship.
