Her main instrument is the saxophone, and she primarily works within modern jazz, improvised and experimental music. In recent years she has taken a new artistic direction and started a solo project where she plays guitar and sings — creating music that blends indie rock and singer-songwriter elements with influences from grunge, pop and experimental soundscapes. Malin is known for her personal tone and musical expression — lyrical and melodic, yet raw and powerful. She moves effortlessly between styles and genres, guided by curiosity and presence rather than labels. “The ear and heart always win over theory. I’m not interested in genres — I’m interested in creativity and being present in the moment; experiencing, exploring, and expressing what is there.” Music has been a lifelong companion to Malin, a space for freedom, healing and growth: “Music is the love of my life. My medicine. My teacher. It connects me with others — musicians, listeners, everyone who loves music — and fills me with inspiration, life force and love. I am forever grateful that music found me.” Malin leads several bands and artistic projects, including her quartet Malin Wättring 4 and Gothenburg Art Ensemble. She has composed commissioned works for Bohuslän Big Band and Gothenburg Wind Orchestra, and has released four albums in her own name. Over the years she has collaborated with many renowned musicians and ensembles across the Nordic music scene. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in improvised music from the Academy of Music & Drama in Gothenburg and has worked professionally since 2011. Sience then they have become a much appreciated group on the modern jazz scene, playing both national and international venues. The music they play is a combination of Malins compositions and free improvisation. They have released three critically acclaimed albums. In 2015 they released their debut album Glöd with Malin Wättring 4 & 8. It was a double vinyl where one LP contained music with the quartet and the other, music with the quartet expanded to an octet, with extra wind, strings and voice. In 2016, Malin got a commission to write 60 minutes music for Bohuslän Big Band and Malin Wättring 4. This work resulted in several concerts, including Fasching's 40th anniversary in Vitabergsparken, and the album Harvest 2018. Harvest was nominated for Jazz Album of The Year at Manifestgalan 2019. In 2019, Malin Wättring 4 released their latest album, Live in Hamburg. The recording was made during a concert in the Rolf Liebmann-Studio at the German radio NDR 2017. The quartet played there two nights in a row and had the honor of sharing the evening with Joao Bosco and the NDR Big Band. Live in Hamburg was voted the second favorite album in the magazine JAZZ 2020. It’s called “Songs of wounds and healing” will be released on the feministic record label PACAYA records. The music can be described as indie rock with strong singer-songwriter roots, colored by grunge, jazz and improvisational music. Intimacy and raw power in symbiosis! The lyrics are deeply personal but at the same time universal and deal with topics such as forgiveness, the search for truth and authenticity and the dilemma of both wanting to have and letting go of control in life. The album was recorded at Elementstudion in Gothenburg between November 2020 and February 2021. She has put together a brand new band for the project, consisting of several up & coming musicians such as Olimpia Dynarek - piano (Olimpias Orkan), Maria Dahlin - drums (Fartyg 6) & Johanna Ekholm - bass (Trio Ramberget). Malin about the album: “Some may find it strange that I completely change genre, instrument and expression with this album. For me, this is the next natural step on my creative path. I experience that this music comes from the same source as when I write and play jazz & improvisational music. The core is the same, it’s coming from deep within me, from my longing and desire to explore, create, express myself and to meet others in that process. The eight tracks on the album have been written in parallel with the jazz compositions I wrote over the past 10 years.
